Diabetes is a disease in which the levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood are very high. This condition affects a significant portion of the population and this is why Light A Candle Mission takes the Diabetes Program to communities of limited resources.
In addition to diagnosis and treatment of this problem, Light A Candle Mission is also starting a new Multiplying Light Program where we conduct a workshop about Diabetes. For 7 sessions, young people in poor communities are able to learn about Diabetes – the symptoms, how to prevent it, how to choose healthy foods, how to maintain a healthy weight and other relevant topics. Among the activities of the workshop is participating in a walk in the community as we help the young people understand why physical activity is so important to health. We also teach the students how to read nutrition labels to understand the amount of sugar in commercial drinks and food so that they can make healthy food and beverage choices. At the end of the 7-session workshop, the students’ accomplishment is celebrated with each young person receiving a t-shirt to identify them as a “Multiplier of Light” and they sample tasty, healthy snacks and foods that would be appropriate for people with diabetes.
